Steven M. Gluckstern

Steven M. Gluckstern is a recently retired executive, entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist, and educator. In 1998, Gluckstern co-founded Capital Z Partners, an alternative asset management firm that currently manages over $4 billion in two global funds. From 1988 to 1998 he worked for Zurich Financial Services in a range of positions including as Chairman of Scudder Mutual Funds, head of Group Investments, head of Reinsurance and as a member of its Group Executive Board. Gluckstern had previously served as General Manager of reinsurance operations of the Warren Buffett controlled Berkshire Hathaway Insurance Group and as an investment banker at Lehman Brothers.
Prior to entering the business sector, Gluckstern spent seven years as a teacher and private and public school administrator. In 1974, he founded the CHOICE program at Scarsdale Jr. High, an alternative educational program which still functions today. He subsequently served as the Elementary School Principal at The Community School in Tehran, Iran, the largest International English speaking school in Iran, and as Superintendent of Schools in Telluride, CO. Over the past 25 years, Gluckstern has served on a wide range of both for profit (public and private) and not-for-profit Boards of Directors including: The National Hockey League Board of Governors (as owner of the Phoenix Coyotes and subsequently, the New York Islanders), the Michael Palm Foundation and the Lucky Star Foundation, the Gluckstern’s family foundation, and has been an active supporter of a broad range of philanthropic activities primarily in the Arts, Children and Education, GLBT causes, and HIV/AIDS research and treatment.
Currently, Gluckstern divides his time working on projects as diverse as developing the Aviator Sports and Recreation complex in Brooklyn, NY, boat building in Bodrum, Turkey, underwriting and overseeing the construction of an orphanage in Lhasa, Tibet, and various other real estate development projects.
An Arjay Miller Scholar and 1982 M.B.A. graduate of the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Gluckstern holds both Ed.D. (1974) and LH.D. (2003 honorary) degrees from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and both B.A. (1972) and LH.D. (1997 honorary) degrees from Amherst College, where he currently serves as a member of its Board of Trustees.
