Lessons Learned, Issue No. 3: New Teachers Talk About Their Jobs, Challenges and Long-Range Plans: Teaching in Changing Times
The third in a series of Lessons Learned reports on new teachers finds two specific areas in which teacher training may be lacking: preparedness for the diversity of the contemporary American classroom and teaching students with special needs.

This report, prepared for IBM's summit on "America's Competitiveness: Hispanic Participation in Technology Careers," is based on in-depth interviews with 19 key leaders from vastly different fields and backgrounds. Nearly all of the interviewees said that when it comes to Hispanic and Latino students, the education pipeline is all but broken.

A national poll shows the majority of voters surveyed understand the importance of subjects like art and music in developing the imagination—which they believe is critical for children to acquire skills necessary to prosper in the future.

Poll reveals that education is the number two priority for voters, trumping taxes, the war in Iraq, and other issues.

Poll found that ninety percent of voters believe education is important. Specifically, nearly three out of five voters polled said education is "very important."

Since 2001, Public Education Network has been polling the American public on what they perceive to be their responsibility for assuring quality public education. These landmark polls have provided much information, including: what Americans value about public education; what voters want their public officials to do to raise achievement levels; what attributes the public want in candidates who say they are education candidates; and actions community members should take to support high quality public schools.

A large majority of Americans think schools are placing too much emphasis on the wrong subjects, and more than half think they're doing just a fair job in preparing children for the work force or giving them the practical skills they need to survive as adults.

A nationwide poll shows broad support among voters of all persuasions for expanded federal investments in children, youth and families. Expressing deep concern about the status of children, voters say they prefer new spending on children over new tax cuts and balancing the budget.

ETS's seventh annual Americans Speak survey, "Standards, Accountability and Flexibility: Americans Speak on No Child Left Behind Reauthorization," was conducted by bipartisan pollsters Peter Hart, Democrat, and David Winston, Republican. Previous Americans Speak surveys have tracked educational issues facing America, including a limited number of questions on the public's impressions of NCLB since the bill first became law. This year's study is devoted entirely to the law.

This new national survey finds that a majority of the public backs the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and the accountability it has brought to public education. The survey was conducted on behalf of Education Next and PEPG by the polling firm Knowledge Networks, which specializes in conducting online survey research for government, academic, and business organizations. The findings are based on a nationally representative, stratified sample of 2,000 adults, age 18 years and older.
